Distinguishing Standard Screw Lamp Base Types in Vietnam

When mentioning lighting systems, most people usually focus only on the type of light bulb and overlook the importance of the lamp base—the key component connecting the power source to the bulb. The lamp base not only ensures compatibility but also significantly affects the performance and safety of the lighting system. In Vietnam, lamp base types have been standardized to meet the diverse needs of users, from households to industrial applications.

Let’s join Phuc Gia to learn about the common screw lamp bases in Vietnam through the article below!

1. What is a screw lamp base?

The lamp base (also known as a lamp holder or socket) is the part used to connect the light bulb to the input power source. This is one of the crucial components that helps hold the bulb firmly and ensures a stable power supply for illumination.

For all lamp lines—incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, and LED lamps—the lamp bases are manufactured according to general standards. Therefore, it is entirely possible to purchase an LED bulb to replace old bulbs, as long as they share the same lamp base standard.

Specifications regarding the lamp base standards are marked by the manufacturer on each product when it leaves the factory. The size of the lamp base (large or small) is usually proportional to the size of the bulb.

Types of Lamp Bases with Sizes

Standard screw lamp bases are typically denoted by the letter “E” followed by a number indicating the base size. Common sizes include 14, 26, 27, and 40.

The letter “E” (Edison) identifies the screw-type base, while the following numbers—14, 26, 27, or 40—represent the outer diameter of the screw portion (measured in millimeters).

In Vietnam, the E27 screw base is the most common, followed by E14. E14 bases are generally used for small-sized bulbs, whereas E27 is suitable for larger bulbs, ensuring compatibility and safety within the lighting system.

2. Common Screw Lamp Bases in Vietnam

  • E12 Lamp Base

E12 screw bases are typically used for small-sized incandescent bulbs, such as refrigerator bulbs or “cherry” (pygmy) bulbs. This base is designed for small bulbs often used for decoration or providing moderate light. Lamps with a 12mm diameter base are often shaped like small fruits or candle flames.

Additionally, some LED models utilize the E12 screw standard, though the most common standard for small bulb lines remains the E14 screw base.

  • E14 Lamp Base

This is the most popular base for small-sized lamps in Vietnam. The E14 base has a diameter of 14mm and is manufactured for both incandescent and LED screw-type bulbs. Decorative chandeliers, wall lamps, and small bulb lights all commonly use this type of base.

Due to their low luminous output, these types of bulbs are primarily used for decorative lighting. You can easily find the E14 base being widely used in Europe and China for Christmas decorations, chandeliers, wall-mounted fixtures, and more.

  • E26 and E27 Lamp Bases

The E26 and E27 screw standards are the two most common base types in Vietnam today. Because they differ only slightly in diameter (1mm), they are often used interchangeably.

In practice, the E27 screw standard is the most widely utilized because it is the go-to choice for standard lighting fixtures. The vast majority of LED bulbs, incandescent screw lamps, and fluorescent lamps adhere to this standard. This is because the E27 is designed with a standard dimension that is prevalent in general lighting equipment, leading most LED screw bulbs to be manufactured according to this size.

  • E40 Lamp Base

This type of base is typically found on fluorescent lamps, mercury vapor HID lamps, and high-power LED bulbs. The E40 base, with its high load-bearing capacity, is widely used in factories, industrial zones, and public lighting systems such as street lights. It ensures powerful lighting performance for areas with high illumination demands.

Phuc Gia has shared basic information about the most common lamp base types updated. In general, the types of lamp bases on the market are very diverse. However, the E14 and E27 screw types remain the most popular. Currently, most LED Bulb models use the universal E27 screw base, allowing many households to easily transition from incandescent and halogen bulbs to more energy-efficient LED bulbs.
