Illuminance: Illuminance is a quantity characterizing the illuminated surface; it is the density of luminous flux on a surface with area (S). This means it is the density of luminous flux from a light source of 1 lumen over an area of 1m². When the surface is illuminated non-uniformly, the illuminance is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the illuminance at various points.

• Exitance M, lumen/m² (lm/m²): The Luminous Exitance at a point on an emitting surface M is the luminous flux emitted by a unit area at that point; it is the ratio between the luminous flux emitted by a surface element containing that point and its area.

• Color Temperature (K): The Color Temperature of a light source, expressed on the Kelvin (K) scale, is the expression of the color of the light it emits. Imagine an iron bar: when cool, it is black; when heated steadily, it glows orange; continued heating turns it yellow; and continued heating until it becomes “warm white”. At any point during this heating process, we can measure the temperature of the steel bar in degrees Kelvin (0ºC corresponds to 273.15K) and assign that value to the color produced.

For incandescent lamps, the color temperature is precisely the temperature of the filament itself. For fluorescent lamps, discharge lamps (generally, all non-incandescent lights), the color temperature is only representative, determined by comparison with the equivalent temperature of a heated black body. When speaking of a lamp’s color temperature, one immediately gets the feeling of whether the light source is “warm,” “neutral,” or “cool.” Generally, the lower the temperature, the warmer the source, and vice versa. To better illustrate this, let’s consider some color temperature values:

25000K – 3000K: Sunset, incandescent lamps.

45000K – 50000K: Cloudy daylight (overcast sky).

60000K – 10.0000K: Light from a very cloudy sky (cool light).

In lighting terminology, it does not strictly use the temperature scale like ºC, but rather uses it to indicate the light’s color spectrum.
