Nations worldwide have varying certification requirements for battery products, and the corresponding safety testing standards for a Lithium Battery also differ. Concurrently, labeling requirements for battery products vary globally. In the course of daily testing and certification for Lithium Battery products, Phuc Gia Laboratory Corporation frequently observes that the sample battery labels submitted by the applicant or the Lithium Battery manufacturing plant fail to meet the applicable certification requirements. This results in the need for rework, which impacts the certification cycle and can even delay product shipment.
To help Phuc Gia Laboratory Corporation’s clients understand the Lithium Battery label requirements in different countries and regions, the requirements for battery labels in various nations, regions, and their certification standards have now been consolidated, to facilitate Phuc Gia LAB’s clients in preparing in advance for their respective markets.

European Union Battery Directive Requirements for Battery Labeling
The European Union requires that all directives for batteries, including any Lithium Battery, accumulators, and button cells, must bear the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. As in the sample below:

If a product’s Mercury (Hg) content surpasses 0.0005%, Cadmium (Cd) content surpasses 0.002%, or Lead (Pb) content surpasses 0.004%, the chemical symbol for the non-compliant metal must be affixed to the waste bin symbol. This chemical symbol must cover a minimum of one-quarter of the waste bin symbol’s area. Should the battery or accumulator contain multiple aforementioned metals, all corresponding chemical symbols are required. For instance, a battery with over 0.004% Lead (Pb) and over 0.0005% Mercury (Hg) must display both the Pb and Hg symbols. When seeking CE approval for battery-operated products (e.g., Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) and AV equipment), all hazardous batteries must feature a clear safety warning.
UN38.3 Labeling Requirements for the Shipment of Lithium Battery Products
For air transport of Lithium Battery and products containing them, IATA DGR regulations mandate that the battery’s surface clearly indicates its rated energy (the Watt-hour rating). Furthermore, every package containing Lithium Batteries or Lithium Battery-equipped products shipped by air must display the standardized Lithium Battery handling label, as pictured below:

Requirements for Lithium Battery labels in the International Standard IEC 62133
The requirements for battery labeling in the safety testing standard IEC 62133, when applied in Vietnam, are translated into QCVN 101:2020/BTTTT. This is also the main standard for the labeling requirements for current Lithium Battery products.

Besides the name, the Lithium Battery label must also reflect the following information: the name of the Lithium Battery or Cell, polarity, date of manufacture (which can be reflected in code form), and the name or brand of the manufacturer or supplier. Furthermore, accumulator products must be additionally labeled with their rated capacity and nominal voltage.
South Korea’s KC Certification Requirements for Lithium Battery Labels
A Lithium Battery subject to South Korea’s KC certification also has special marking requirements, as shown in the following table:

Example of KC certification for Batteries:

KC62133-2:2020 is based on the IEC 62133-2/AMD1 standard.
The scope of KC for rechargeable Lithium Battery products will be expanded to include personal mobility devices with speeds under 25 km per hour (e.g., self-balancing electric vehicles, Scooters, electric bicycles).
Japan’s PSE Certification for Lithium Battery Labeling Requirements
A Lithium Battery subject to PSE certification must have its surface marked with the round PSE mark. And the Lithium Battery is required to be marked with nominal voltage, rated capacity,…

Example of PSE certification for Batteries:

Vietnam’s Standard Requirements for Lithium Battery Labels
QCVN 101:2020/BTTTT – National technical regulation on Lithium Batteries for handheld devices
This regulation covers the minimum technical requirements that serve as the technical basis for the management and quality assessment of the Lithium Battery for handheld devices, including standalone Lithium Batteries or those installed in mobile phones, tablets, and notebook computers.
This regulation applies to Lithium Battery products and goods with HS codes as specified in Appendix B.
Note: The regulation does not apply to a standalone Lithium Battery that functions as a power bank.

Example: on the Battery label is written 3ICP7/63/69-2
3ICP7/63/69-2 symbolizes a prismatic Li-ion secondary cell with 3 cell arrays connected, Cobalt is the positive electrode, the maximum thickness is in the range of 6 mm to 7 mm, the maximum width is in the range of 62 mm to 63 mm, and the maximum height is from 67 mm to 69 mm.
