Phuc Gia® is an organization that provides information and definitions regarding what luminance is to organizations and enterprises, especially consumers who are interested in luminance. When we look at a light source or an illuminated object, we have the sensation of glare. So, what exactly is luminance? Therefore, to gain more useful information about luminance, please refer to the article below by Phuc Gia®!

What is Luminance?
Luminance: When we look at a light source or an illuminated object, we experience the sensation of glare. To characterize the ability of a light source or a reflective surface to emit light that causes the sensation of glare to the eye, the concept of Luminance is introduced. The elemental areas of illuminated objects generally reflect the received light differently and act as secondary light sources emitting varying luminous intensities in all directions.
To characterize the relationship of the light source (primary source and secondary source) with the eye, the appearance of the light must be added to the luminous intensity. This relationship can be illustrated by the following observation: for example, a 40 W incandescent lamp essentially emits the same luminous flux, meaning the same intensity in all directions, regardless of whether the bulb is clear glass or frosted glass. However, to our eyes, the clear glass bulb feels more glaring than the frosted glass bulb. Luminance (L) is defined for a given direction of a radiating surface area dS as the ratio of the luminous intensity dI emitted by dS in that direction to the apparent area of dS. We note that the luminance of a radiating surface depends on the direction of observation but does not depend on the distance from the source to the observation point. We will see later that luminance plays a fundamental role in lighting engineering; it is the basis for the concepts of perception and visual comfort. Luminance truly reflects the quality of illumination, whereas illuminance only reflects the quantity of illumination.
Table of Luminance for some common sources.
The luminance of a light-reflecting surface in a specific direction is also referred to as Radiance (or Luminance Factor in some contexts).
| Light Source | Luminance (cd/m²) |
| Surface of the Sun | 165.107 |
| Surface of the Moon | 2500 |
| Blue Sky | 1500 |
| Overcast Sky | 1000 |
| 100W Incandescent Lamp | 6.106 |
| 40W Fluorescent Lamp | 7000 |
| White Paper at an Illuminance of 400 lux | 80 |
| Road Surface Luminance | 1-2 |
Symbol: L
Unit: Cd/m²
Cd/m² is the luminance of a uniformly emitting flat surface with an area of 1m² and a luminous intensity of 1 Cd perpendicular to that source.
Examples of Luminance for some surfaces:
Fluorescent Lamp Surface: 5.000-15.000 Cd/m²
Asphalt Road Surface illuminated with 30 lux: approximately 2 Cd/m²
Sunrise: approximately 5.106 Cd/m²
Midday Sun: approximately 1,5 – 2.109 Cd/m²
