Electrical protection classes are defined as the parameters that indicate the insulation capability and the anti-electric shock protection of a lamp or lighting fixture.
According to the IEC 61140 standard (Protection against electric shock), there are three protection classes:
Class I: The lighting fixture must be connected to a safety ground (earth) to protect the user upon contact.

Class II: The lighting fixture features an outer insulating shell (double or reinforced insulation); therefore, grounding is not required.

Class III: The lighting fixture operates on low-voltage direct current (12V DC). Consequently, grounding is not necessary.

In Practice:
Industrial LED Lights: High-bay lights, LED street lights, LED floodlights, etc., which use alternating current (220V AC), usually have Class I protection. These lights are often combined with RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection) circuit breakers, which are ready to cut power in the event of current leakage, overload, or short circuits.
Indoor Residential Lights with Plastic Shells: T8 1.2m LED tubes, LED bulbs, LED downlights, etc., typically have Class II protection. These lights generally have lower power ratings; thus, they are constructed with plastic shells (to reduce costs) or have their metal parts covered externally with insulating materials.
Garden, Underwater Pool, and Aquarium Lights: To ensure maximum safety, these applications use 12V DC power. Class III protection helps guarantee safety for both humans and animals in these wet environments.
