What are Lamp Power (Wattage)
- Lamp Power (Wattage): The amount of electrical energy consumed by the lamp.
Example: A 1.2m T8 fluorescent lamp has a rated power of 36W and a loss of 10%, resulting in a total power consumption of 40W. Thus, the amount of electrical energy consumed over 24 hours is: 960W ~ 1kW (commonly referred to as 1 unit of electricity).
The electrical energy supplied to the light source is not completely converted into light but is transformed into various other forms of energy such as chemical energy, thermal radiation, and electromagnetic radiation. Visible light radiation is only a portion of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the source. From the perspective of lighting engineering, we are only concerned with the energy flux of visible light radiation; therefore, the concept of energy flux of visible light radiation is introduced, which is the fraction of energy radiated as light by the source per second in all directions.
- Unit: Watt (W).
What is Luminous Efficacy?
- Luminous Efficacy: Luminous efficacy is the ratio between the luminous flux emitted by the light source and the electrical power consumed by the light source. It signifies how many lumens are produced per watt of electricity. Luminous efficacy’s unit is Lm/W.
Example: A T8 fluorescent lamp with a power of 36W has a luminous efficacy of 40~50 Lm/W. Therefore, the total luminous flux emitted = 36W*40~50 (Lm/W) = 1440~1800Lm. This is why the light fixture is designed to collect almost all of this luminous flux. This luminous efficacy index will decrease over time of use, causing the bulb to gradually dim and require replacement.
In lighting engineering, the concept of efficiency in the traditional sense (calculated as a percentage, ≤ 1 is not used; instead, the concept of luminous efficacy is employed. Luminous efficacy fully expresses the light source’s ability to convert consumed energy into luminous energy.
Some documents refer to this concept as the light source’s efficiency. However, using the term “efficiency” suggests a percentage ratio between quantities with the same unit of measurement. Contrary to the definition of efficiency, luminous efficacy has a value much greater than 1 and is the ratio of two different units of measurement (Lm/W), making the use of the term efficiency inappropriate.
