Colors, Hue and Chroma

What are Hue and Chroma?

Hue and Chroma: Hue and chroma are not identical concepts. In nature, colors are divided into two groups: achromatic colors and chromatic colors.

  • Achromatic colors are colors like black, white, and gray (between black and white). They are not present in the solar light spectrum and are therefore considered “colorless.”
  • Chromatic colors are all the colors present in the light spectrum and the mixtures between them.

The white daylight we see is complex light composed of many monochromatic lights with a continuous frequency spectrum in the visible radiation region; however, the quality of daylight changes significantly according to climatic and weather conditions.

The white light source W emitted by a xenon lamp has constant energy in the visible spectrum, while the white light source A is related to incandescent lamps, which are rich in red radiation. White light source B represents bright daylight, and white light source C represents cloudy daylight, which is rich in blue radiation.

When perceiving light, humans are subjected to the psychological effects of light color through an “associative” mechanism. For example, red and orange colors evoke associations with fire and cause a sensation of warmth. Blue colors evoke associations with the sky and the sea, causing a sensation of coolness.

The above association creates the temperature-color relationship, meaning that each color corresponds to a specific temperature.

The Psycho-Physiological Effects of Color

The psycho-physiological effects of color: Three types of light sources are distinguished:

  • Warm Light will enhance red and orange colors in objects, while darkening blue and cyan colors. Warm colors give a heavier sense of mass compared to other colors and cause psychological excitement, creating a feeling of joy and exhilaration, and leading to increased blood pressure and increased respiration rate. However, warm colors also cause rapid fatigue. Orange has a good effect on the digestive system, and yellow stimulates mental activity.

For these reasons, warm light is often used in small, narrow spaces, creating a feeling of closeness, solemnity, sanctity, mystery, and antiquity.

  • Neutral Light (White) creates a cold and empty impression, but it increases the brightness and impact of the colors standing next to it. Neutral light is often used when uniformity is required, without emphasizing any particular color. This type of light source is typically used for illuminating structures with simple designs that require uniform illumination across the building’s surfaces.

In contrast to warm colors, Cool Colors give us a feeling of lightness in mass and distance in space: Green and blue colors give us a feeling of freshness, calming stimulation, and creating a sense of peace and relaxation. Purple, in addition to feeling cool, can cause psychological sadness, passivity, and listlessness.

  • Cool Light is used when the desired effect is relaxation and rest, or to create a modern stylistic setting, suitable for public areas with large spaces and areas with lots of greenery. However, it is necessary to avoid using cool light to illuminate the facades of houses with red tiles or dark paint, especially historical architectural works. The impact of color on human psychology is mainly due to association.

When designing lighting, the color temperature of the light source must be chosen to match the person’s psycho-physiological characteristics: low illuminance should be paired with a low color temperature light source, and conversely, high illuminance requirements should be paired with “cool” light sources having a high color temperature. This physiological characteristic was proven by Kruithof. Through his research, he developed the Kruithof diagram as the first standard for selecting light sources in any lighting design project (though other standards followed later). In the Kruithof diagram, the cross-hatched region is called the comfortable light environment zone. With a given illuminance E (lux), the lighting designer must choose a light source whose color temperature falls within the cross-hatched region to ensure that it does not negatively affect the human psycho-physiology; failure to meet this condition will lead to the phenomenon of “light pollution,” which can be detrimental to health.

Studies on visual physiology show that light sources with low color temperatures are only acceptable at low illuminance levels, whereas high illuminance requires higher color temperatures. The comfortable lighting environment lies within the cross-hatched area on the Kruithof diagram.

The Kruithof diagram is the first standard for the selection of light sources. We observe that to achieve high-comfort illuminance, the light source must have an appropriate color temperature. The table above provides the color temperatures of several light sources.
